The last Ardour release at CDM has some interesting words from Ardour's developer himself Role Playing Ive had similar bad experiences throughout the years…almost giving up, but doing a more throurough system checkup before that. Reaper gives me every option in the world, but it is a tiny bit more work (some buggy plugins just aren't worth it sometimes).
2 Macbook Pros, 10.10.5 and 10.6.8, loaded with every ridiculous free plugin imaginable and a handful of the standard software vendors ones, all sample rates. Reaper has for years been the most stable DAW I've used. Never crashes, rarely hiccups. Never had it scan plugin folders when it shouldn't. Never had it disconnect from a variety of interfaces. Doesn't slow down. Doesn't crash on inserting plugin.
Ardours paul davis also is a brilliant software engr imho.

Windows users should copy the file into their REAPER Program directory, which by default will be C:\Program Files\REAPER. It can also be copied to other applications that may need it (e.g. Audacity).
